IPEC. To promote holistic, patient-centered healthcare, AACP and its partners in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) hosted a faculty-development institute, Building Your Foundation for Interprofessional Education. Institution-based teams of three to five professionals participated in the May program, held in Herndon, Virginia. Each team represented various facets of healthcare, including pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, nursing, osteopathic medicine and public health. Approximately 150 participants engaged in interactive sessions to learn the core competencies of interprofessional teamwork and developed an implementation plan for their institution.
As a founding organization in IPEC, AACP promotes integration in the education of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. The additional founding members are the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the American Dental Education Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the Association of Schools of Public Health.
The new IPEC organization formalizes the collaborative work that began three years ago and led to the release of the May 2011 report “Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice.” Disseminated broadly to health professions schools, the report sparked a wave of implementation efforts by educators eager to prepare clinicians for contemporary practice standards.
With interest in interprofessional education now widespread, the May institute sold out fast. Future regional IPEC institutes are being planned for 2013.
Recognizing interprofessional education as an effective way to prepare the healthcare workforce and improve care delivery, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation advanced IPEC efforts in a significant way this year. The foundation awarded funding to AAMC to launch a portal supporting the core competencies report. A national clearinghouse is being created on MedEdPORTAL providing competency-linked learning resources for interprofessional education and models of team-based care.
Diabetes care. Enthusiasm for interprofessional care and education extended to other programs. Awarded an additional $106,000 Sanofi-Aventis grant this year, AACP was able to expand its regional programs on interprofessional team performance improvement in diabetes care. These educational sessions focus on patients with diabetes in underserved populations.
The first program funded by the new grant was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was a tremendous success. The additional 2012 educational sessions will take place in Queens, New York and Asheville, North Carolina.
A new advisory panel for the Center for the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Education was formed this spring to revise the CAPE Educational Outcomes, developed in 2004. The outcomes are the target toward which the evolving pharmacy curriculum should aim. The CAPE Advisory Panel’s initial work will inform the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education’s September 2012 Summit, “Advancing Quality in Pharmacy Education: Charting Accreditation’s Future.” The event is expected to initiate revision of the ACPE Standards and Guidelines.
Each of the nine organizations in the Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners was invited to nominate volunteers from their membership to serve on the CAPE Advisory Panel. Its first meeting included a joint session with colleagues from the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) to gain input from the other health professions.
One of AACP’s most significant alliances, the Global Alliance for Pharmacy Education, expanded this year. AACP and the other original partners from Africa, Asia, Canada and Mexico welcomed organizations from Europe, Central America and South America into GAPE. All representing pharmacy faculty, the partnering associations work together to advance the quality of pharmacy and pharmaceutical education around the world.
Key in supporting this mission is the just-launched GAPE Web site. This communication platform provides information about events and resources created by the GAPE associations.
AACP leaders represented the Association as delegates and speakers at many international conferences this year, including events hosted by the Asian, Canadian and European Associations of Faculties of Pharmacy and the Pan American Conference on Pharmaceutical Education. AACP rejoined the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) as an organizational member and celebrated the election of several AACP members into the FIP Academic Section leadership.
AAMS. The Assessment and Accreditation Management System is a vivid illustration of AACP’s commitment to supporting pharmacy schools in fulfilling assessment and accreditation goals. AACP designed AAMS in partnership with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Since the system’s release last year, use has been strong:
Award for Excellence in Assessment. The Award for Excellence in Assessment recognizes outstanding Doctor of Pharmacy assessment programs for developing and applying evidence of outcomes as part of the ongoing evaluation and improvement of pharmacy professional education. The premiere professional development event for pharmacy educators—the AACP Annual Meeting—provided invaluable learning opportunities to 1,889 participants in 2011. With the second highest attendance ever, the San Antonio conference was a high-energy week of educational sessions and networking events.
Keynote speaker Dr. Roberta L. Bondar electrified the Opening General Session audience with her insights on innovation, discovery and leadership. During her presentation, Bondar drew on experiences as an astronaut, physician, scientist and educator.
Annual Meeting sessions covered a wide range of topics, including interprofessional education, assessment, management, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Speakers led participants through discussions of developments in pharmacy education and practice.
Conference attendees also had the opportunity to view the latest products and services that support their work. Thirty-two exhibitors participated in the event.
No event would be complete without celebrations, and there were plenty. Participants cheered on award winners and applauded the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education for its 75th anniversary.
To better meet the needs of member institutions, AACP conducted a pilot study for a revised financial survey. Twenty-six pharmacy schools participated in the pilot, and based on their feedback, the pilot survey will be adopted as the official AACP Financial Survey beginning in December 2012.
AACP also implemented a revised Tuition Survey in 2012. The revision better captures tuition and fees for all professional years.
Further enhancing its institutional research efforts, AACP added survey questions regarding interprofessional education and required learning experiences to the Graduating Student Survey and the Survey of Professional and Graduate Degree Programs. Data from these new survey items will be incorporated into the Healthy People 2020 data collection and reporting.
