AACP Wal-Mart Scholars Program

AACP and Wal-Mart share the commitment to help colleges and schools of pharmacy ensure there is an adequate number of well-prepared individuals who aspire to join the faculties at our expanding number of institutions across the country. The goal of the scholarship program is to strengthen the recipient’s skills and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy through their participation at the AACP Annual Meeting and Seminars.

In 2009, AACP celebrated the fifth year of the Wal-Mart Scholarship Fund. The program, funded by Wal-Mart, provided $1,000 scholarships to 65 student-faculty pairs from AACP member institutions to attend two AACP 2009 seminars in Boston, Mass. The scholarship covered 100 percent of the student’s registration costs and 50 percent of the faculty’s registration costs at the Annual Meeting’s early-bird rate. The scholarship also covered registration for both the student and faculty mentor to attend the Teacher’s Seminar. Beyond registration, the recipients could choose to apply the remainder of the scholarship to airfare, lodging and other meeting expenses for the student. Wal-Mart’s continued support helped the program grow 30 percent over the previous year.

Graduate students, professional (doctoral) students, residents and fellows, along with their faculty mentors, are eligible to apply for the scholarships. Previous Wal-Mart Scholarship Recipients are ineligible. Letters from both the student and the faculty member are required to demonstrate both parties have a strong interest in enhancing their preparation for a career in academic pharmacy. Applications for the program are due in February of each year, pending program sponsorship. The application must arrive at AACP by close-of-business on the due date, in addition to being postmarked by the date. Information is coming soon with details about next year’s program.
