Leading Forward: Practicing Adaptive Leadership

Program Description

Adaptive Leadership is the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive.  It is a model that is rooted in the relationships that exist between leadership, adaptation, systems and change.  The practice of adaptive leadership is critical when organizations are operating in environments where deeply held beliefs are being challenged, values that made the organization successful previously are becoming less relevant and competing perspectives are emerging for how to address the challenges faced by the organization.

This session will combine presentations, group discussions and personal reflection activities to explore the practice of adaptive leadership and its application to the participant’s personal work.  Activities will focus on differentiating technical problems from adaptive challenges, identifying qualities of an adaptive organization and identifying strategies for mobilizing members of the organization to identify solutions to the challenges facing them.  Participants will consider the importance of self-reflection to understand personal identities, purpose, loyalties and triggers and how these factors influence one’s ability to lead change.

Program Design

Combination of short lectures, small group discussions, facilitated breakout sessions and individual reflection activities coordinated over 7.5 hours of meeting time divided into two half-day sessions.

Program Purpose

The offering of this program is in response to AACP member requests for substantive leadership development programming.  The topic of Adaptive Leadership is rooted in challenges faced by leaders in academic pharmacy, facing challenges that require adaptation in the way the academic enterprise operates in order to thrive.  The program and topic is also aligned with the emerging “ACT2” initiative endorsed by the AACP Board of Directors, which is focused on supporting schools in accelerating change in their work to harness opportunities presented in an evolving health care landscape.
