Zubin Austin, Ph.D.
Associate Dean–Academic, Associate Professor, and OCP Research Professor in Pharmacy

Zubin Austin, Ph.D., is associate dean – academic, associate professor, and OCP research professor in pharmacy at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the area of health professions education and has received the AACP Rufus A. Lyman Award in 2006.  Austin is also an award winning educator, having received awards from the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and has been named undergraduate professor of the year on nine separate occasions.

 

 

Sarah Miller, M.S.

Sarah Miller is the co-director of the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This nationally renowned program aims to cultivate a new generation of faculty and future faculty in teaching, learning and mentoring. Miller is primarily responsible for training scientists in classroom teaching and evaluating the impact of the program on its participants and their students. The projects have resulted in multiple publications in Science and other peer-reviewed education journals. Miller is a co-author of Scientific Teaching and Entering Mentoring: A Seminar to Train a New Generation of Scientists and the co-editor of the Scientific Teaching Book Series in partnership with W.H. Freeman & Co. Miller has played a key role in the design of the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology, particularly in training facilitators, dissemination of scientific teaching and evaluation.  For her work, Miller has been annually named a National Academies Education Mentor in the Life Sciences (2004-09) and has been inducted into the UW-Madison Teaching Academy. Through WPST, she also directs the HHMI Teaching Fellows Program. Her most recent project, the NSF-funded Scientific Teaching Postdoc Program, aims to train postdoctoral researchers to disseminate scientific teaching through workshops and professional-society conferences (NSF-CCLI no. 0817545). Her graduate work in plant pathology investigated how plant defense genes affect microbial communities affiliated with the rhizosphere. 

 

Melissa S. Medina, Ed.D.
Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation
Clinical Associate Professor
The University of Oklahoma

Melissa S. Medina is the assistant dean for assessment and evaluation at the College of Pharmacy and a clinical associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy: Clinical and Administrative Sciences at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. At Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Medina earned her bachelor’s degree in experimental psychology and master’s and doctorate degree in educational psychology. 

After teaching for three years at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education, Medina joined the faculty at The University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy in August 2000 and coordinates several teaching methods courses and teaching certificate programs for faculty, residents and graduate and professional students nationally, across campus and within the College of Pharmacy. She also serves as the director of preparing future faculty for The University of Oklahoma Graduate College where she coordinates a year-long teaching methods course for graduate students and post-docs. She is an active member of AACP where she is the inaugural Assessment SIG chair and is part of the teaching excellence task force.

Medina was the 2009 P4 Teacher of the Year, the 2008 Rho Chi Outstanding Faculty Award recipient, the 2005 College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year, and a multi-time recipient of the college’s Phi Lambda Sigma Outstanding Faculty Member Award. In 2007, Medina and her colleagues won the AACP Teaching Innovations Award for their work on team-based learning. During her graduate studies, she was awarded the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education dissertation proposal award for her work on using cases in teaching. 

 

Patrick T. Jackson, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of International Relations
Director of General Education
American University

Patrick Thaddeus Jackson is currently associate professor of international relations in the School of International Service at the American University in Washington, DC; he is also director of general education for the university. He previously taught at Columbia University and New York University. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University in 2001. In 2003-2004, he served as president of the International Studies Association-Northeast. He is presently the editor-in-chief of the Journal of International Relations and Development.

Jackson's research interests include culture and agency, international relations theory (particularly the intersection of realism and constructivism), sociological methodology, the role of rhetoric in public life, the concept of 'Western Civilization,' and the political and social theory of Max Weber. He teaches courses on international relations theory, political philosophy, research methodology, the philosophy of social science, and the intersection of popular culture and international politics. He has three times received university awards for the innovative use of technology in the classroom and was the American University Honors Program's Faculty Member of the Year for 2004-05.  

His book Civilizing the Enemy: German Reconstruction and the Invention of the West was published in 2006 by the University of Michigan Press, and he is the co-editor of Civilizational Identity: The Production and Reproduction of 'Civilizations' in International Relations (with Martin Hall; Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). His new book The Conduct of Inquiry in International Relations will be published by Routledge in 2010.
