To help address concerns over U.S. students' performance in science and mathematics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has launched the Partnership for Science Literacy campaign, with funding from the National Science Foundation. The program, "Science. It's Everywhere," aims to increase public awareness - particularly among parents and families of Latino/Hispanic, African American and other minority students - of the value and importance of science literacy for their children's future. This initiative provides materials to help them find out more about science and science education. It also aims to foster cooperation among science centers, museums, and other science-rich institutions to encourage learning through everyday activities.
The public outreach initiative is designed to convey four key ideas:
The campaign includes Ad Council-sponsored radio, television and print public service announcements; national and community-specific bilingual (English/Spanish) version of a "Family Guide to Science," and a Web site designed for parents, community leaders and teachers. To view a PDF version of the Family Guide pamphlet, go to http://www.tryscience.org/parents/se_2.html.
AACP member institutions can participate in the Partnership for Science Literacy campaign by creating a link on their institutional Web site to the AAAS site, www.ScienceEverywhere.org, by promoting the availability of the site to local primary and secondary schools systems, and by using these materials in the college and school's own K-12 outreach efforts.
