Recruiting for Tomorrow:  Applicant Pools, Scholarships, and Job Placement

One of AACP’s strategic priorities is to increase the Pharm.D. applicant pipeline to ensure there will be an appropriate number and quality of pharmacists to meet society’s needs.  Recent times show a decline in the number of applicants for pharmacy schools.  This has forced pharmacy schools to revisit current admission practices.  Some of the issues and questions that will be discussed include:

  • Review the current state of PharmCAS applicants, the primary drivers affecting the decline, and a summary of selected national recruitment efforts
  • Discussion of college-level strategic planning for recruitment including:
  • Who needs to be involved in discussing recruitment strategies?
  • How do you balance different priorities (i.e. diversity, funding, academics) when deciding on new recruitment strategies?
  • How do you evaluate the financial impact of recruitment decisions?
  • Beyond the finances, what other factors need to be considered when conducting a cost-benefit analysis of recruitment strategies?

The other issue we will be examining is whether current enrollment and recruitment decisions may impact the future employment outlook of our students?  Some of the questions include:

  • Are pharmacy jobs on the decline?  If not, where are the jobs?
  • Should job outlook be a consideration for recruitment decisions?

Objectives:
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Learn about the current applicant pool and discuss different drivers affecting current applicant trends.
  2. Learn about the different recruitment strategies practiced across the academy and the financial resources needed.
  3. Reflect on changes in the employment market and how current recruitment and admission trends may affect future employment
