5 Stars: How to prepare and deliver an award winning external promotion letter

There is a paucity of data describing the peer-review process of promotion and tenure in the pharmacy literature.  In addition, there is significant variability in the requirements for promotion and tenure in colleges of pharmacy.  For instance, some institutions may require external peer-review letters of recommendation while others may require a combination of external and internal peer-review letters of recommendation.  Yancey and colleagues conducted a survey of 44 department chairs to determine requirements and expectations of the external review process.  They noted 82% of respondents expressed that their institution required external review, with the majority requiring at least three reviewers at the associate/professor rank with a similar practice specialty and/or research/scholarship focus.  External peer-reviewers are essential to the promotion process, and a well written letter providing a comprehensive review can add considerably to the candidate’s dossier.  However, there are few recommendations to highlight the best practices for the peer-review process.  The focus of this webinar will be to provide an overview of the peer-review process including perspectives from a department chair and faculty member who has participated in the external peer-review process.

Objectives:

  1. Characterize a review process for completing an external promotion review
  2. Implement a stepwise process using school-specific criteria to construct an external promotion letter
  3. Describe key characteristics of a strong external letter of recommendation for promotion.
