Lucinda L. Maine, Ph.D., R.Ph., AACP executive vice president and CEO, will receive the American Pharmacists Association’s Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award, recognizing her exemplary service as a role model and mentor, promoting and encouraging pharmacists to attain leadership positions. Maine will be recognized during the Opening General Session of APhA’s Annual Meeting, March 16-19, in Nashville.

The pharmacist for whom the award is named – Gloria Niemeyer Francke, Pharm.D. – personally exemplified the award’s criteria. Francke, 1986 APhA Honorary President and 1987 Remington Honor Medalist, inspired and mentored future leaders throughout her illustrious pharmacy career.

“I can't imagine a higher honor for me, personally, than to receive the Francke Leadership Mentor Award,” Maine said. “I was blessed by the opportunity to work directly with Gloria just as I graduated from Auburn. Our lives intersected repeatedly until pharmacy lost an icon upon her passing 10 years ago.”

APhA’s 2018 Recognition of Excellence publication highlights Maine’s individual mentorship to student pharmacists, administrators, faculty and staff of member schools:

Maine began her career in leadership as national president of then SAPhA in 1979 and has held professional and voluntary leadership roles in academia, state and national associations ever since. In addition to 10 years in policy and professional affairs at APhA, she served as Speaker of the House of Delegates, Trustee to the Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the House Committee on Nominations among other roles. Maine represents pharmacy at NAM, Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professions Education, Interprofessional Education Collaborative, Research America, and many others.

“Franke was a role model, mentor, cajoler and encourager,” Maine continued. “I will be forever grateful also for many others who helped shape and guide my love affair with pharmacy. And I could not do what I do without the support of my family and dear friends. My most heartfelt thanks this morning goes to those of you who have allowed me the privilege to be part of your personal and professional journeys. I am blessed to be your guide, your confidant and friend.”

The award consists of a crystal memento bearing the likeness of the APhA building and the name of the recipient.
