Faculty, preceptors, and administrators in pharmacy programs can benefit from special development in the area of connecting with students and peers in a post heteronormative and cis-gendered academic world. Herein, we present authentic case scenarios highlighting social and human resource elements with a focus on the complexities surrounding the LGBTQ+ acronym. We also discuss ways to use inclusive language, and strategies to improve the academic experience for students and faculty who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who support them.

Objectives

  • Define LGBTQ+ and commonly associated terms.
  • Develop strategies for using inclusive language across all academic endeavors.
  • Learn to recognize organizational dynamics that may be detrimental for pharmacy programs and their LGBTQ+ communities.
  • Establish opportunities to be a champion for LGBTQ+ within your institution and your external stakeholders (e.g. patients, preceptors).
