Power dynamics exist in professional relationships, including those between learners and preceptors in pharmacy education. These dynamics can significantly influence a learner’s professional identity formation, self-perception, and views on the profession and practice settings. This continuing education webinar will explore the impact of power imbalances in experiential education and provide strategies for fostering a more balanced and supportive learning environment. By the end of the session, participants will be able to recognize learner/preceptor power dynamics and apply effective communication techniques to navigate these challenges successfully.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the impact of power dynamics in pharmacy experiential education including factors such as generational, cultural, and gender influences that may affect learner-preceptor interactions.
  • Discuss effective communication strategies to foster a psychologically safe learning environment that encourages open dialogue and constructive feedback between preceptors and learners.
  • Implement approaches to mitigate power imbalances by incorporating learner-centered feedback techniques and reflective preceptor practices to enhance experiential education outcomes.
