Research Grants, Fellowships and Scholarship Programs

Competitive programs offering research support, fellowships and other programs for those interested in academic and research careers are available from AACP and other organizations. Pharm.D. students, residents, fellows, graduate students and faculty are eligible to apply to specific programs:

  • AFPE Scholarships and Fellowships: The American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education offers a number of research grants and fellowships for students in basic, clinical, translational and health outcomes research.
  • AACP Walmart Scholars Program: This yearly scholarship program is designed to strengthen the recipient’s skills and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy through their participation at the AACP Annual Meeting.
  • Other Pharmacy Organization Opportunities: Many pharmacy organizations offer research grants or fellowships for student pharmacists, graduate students, residents, fellows and early career faculty. Please check specific organizations for eligibility criteria and deadlines.

Other Pharmacy Organization Opportunities

American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation Incentive Grant Program: The Incentive Grants for Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care offer pharmacists, students and community pharmacy residents seed money to implement or support an existing patient care service within their pharmacy practice. Approximately 20 grants are funded each year, and applications are typically due in early September. Duration: 1 year

Community Pharmacy Foundation Grant Program: The Community Pharmacy Foundation provides grant support for collaborative research between faculty at colleges and schools of pharmacy in the U.S. and community pharmacy practice sites that highlight new and emerging innovations in patient care. The grant application process involves two-steps: a grant application submission, followed by an invitation to submit a grant proposal. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed 4-5 times per year. Duration: 1 year

National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation Community Pharmacy Faculty Scholars Program: This program is a collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and is designed to mentor junior faculty at U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy through the design, conduct and evaluation of meaningful community pharmacy-based patient care research. Duration: 18 months

PhRMA Foundation Awards: The PhRMA Foundation offers a wide range of research grants and fellowships for students, postdoctoral fellows, early career and established faculty. Disciplines supported by PhRMA Foundation awards include Health Outcomes, Informatics, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology/Toxicology and Translational Medicine and Therapeutics. Application deadlines vary depending on the award.

American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation Pharmacy Practice Research Grants: The ASHP Foundation offers a number of grants to pharmacists of various career stages to advance optimal patient outcomes through the design and study of safe and effective medication-use systems.
