Pharm4Me Innovation Challenge

OptumRx and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) invites middle/high school students and current student pharmacists to partner on the Pharm4Me Innovation Challenge! Student teams will collaborate to identify innovative solutions to medication or health-related problems in their communities.  Submissions are due via submission form by March 15, 2019.   • Acne or skin disorders
  • Behavioral vs. pharmacological management
  • Depression (coping mechanisms, social stigma)
  • Drug abuse (illegal, opioids, narcotics, prescriptions)
  • Immunizations/vaccinations (flu, HPV pneumonia, by age)
  • Medications (side effects, costs, branding, myths)
  • Obesity or eating disorders
  • Poison prevention
  • Pregnancy prevention
  • Tobacco use
  • Wellness (nutrition, healthy habits, stress management)

Projects

Student-led teams follow the instructions published through Pharmacy is Right for Me to explore and create a project on a health-related problem in their community. Through collaboration and development of materials, teams describe the problem, solution, and reflection. A full description and application packet can be access through Pharmacy is Right for Me.

Goals

A primary goal of the Pharm4Me Innovation Challenge competition is to stimulate interest in pharmacy careers by exposing high school students to pharmacy or health-related problems with opportunities to create innovative community‐based solutions. It is also intended to encourage student pharmacists to advocate for the importance of the role of the pharmacist and demonstrate the impact pharmacists can make on population health.

Prizes

  • Student members of the winning teams will receive an Innovation Challenge award certificate and letter.
  • Plaques will be awarded to the middle/high school and pharmacy college or school of each winning team.
  • A cash prize will be awarded to the middle/high school of each winning team to support STEM programs:
    • First place: $1000
    • Second place: $500
    • Third place: $250
  • A travel grant will be awarded to the pharmacy college or school of each winning team to attend the 2019 AACP Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL for an awards ceremony. A member of the winning team (preferred) or selected representative (e.g. CEO Dean) must register for the Annual Meeting before the travel grant will be issues. Meeting registration fees will not be waived:
    • First place: $500
    • Second place: $300
    • Third place: $200
  • Cash awards and travel grants will only be made payable to the appropriate institution and not an individual.

Student Affairs: Strategies to Promote a Culture of Well-being among Students and Faculty. Stress, anxiety and tragedy are disruptive to student learning. Colleges and schools of pharmacy should provide mindful programs to support an environment of well-being for students, and faculty, which will help minimize the impact of these pressures.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Grant Evaluation Criteria

The following criteria will be used by review committee members in evaluating applications. Please refer to the criteria and the questions below as a guide for the preparation of SOTL Grant applications.

  1. Nature of Project 
    1. Does the applicant present the nature, structure, and scope of the project clearly, concisely and in context of previous work in the field?
  1. Specific Aims 
    1. Does the applicant adequately and clearly describe the intent of the project?
    2. Does the applicant demonstrate a clear understanding of the project?
    3. Are the goals clearly defined and are they appropriate to the purpose of the project?
  1. Significance of the Project
    1. Does the proposed research have the impact of adding newteaching/learning/assessment techniques or methodology?
    2. Is there a stated intent to utilize the results as preliminary data for a more substantial research project in the same or a closely related area?
    3. Is there a stated plan to disseminate (publish, present, utilize) the project’s results?
  1. Methods 
    1. Methods to be used for the study: 
      1. Does the application describe the proposed methods in sufficient detail and clarity?
      2. Are the methods to be employed technically sound and appropriate to the project’s purposes and objectives?
      3. Do the proposed methods represent the most effective way to achieve the results stated in the application?
      4. Are the methods workable within the two-year timeline for the grant?
      5. If needed, is the cooperation of collaborative parties assured?
      6. Is there adequate discussion on the limitations of the methods and on alternative approaches?
    2. Data analysis and interpretation: 
      1. Does the application provide evidence that the Principal Investigator can efficiently determine (evaluate) the outcomes (data) obtained in the study?
      2. Are evaluation indicators clearly stated?
      3. Is the evaluation process designed to properly measure the effective outcomes of the project?
  2. Timeline 
    1. The project is appropriate for the time period.
  3. Contribution to Career 
    1. Is there a clearly stated purpose of the project in terms of its relation to the future research interests of the applicant?
  1. Budget Justification 
    1. Are the requested supply and equipment items supportive of and consistent with the methods outlined in the Research Narrative?
    2. Are salary requests (rate and time) for student and technical trainees justified and consistent with the application timeline
